Over Fall Break in 2003 my friend Duncan and I made a trip to Great Sand Dunes Nat'l Park before making our first attempt at climbing Blanca Peak. We had only seen the Sand Dunes from the road on previous trips in Southern Colorado, so this time we decided we'd make it a destination for our trip. We arrived in the morning and spent the majority of the day on the dunes. We took sleds with us because we had been told that sledding on the dunes was really awesome. We climbed the southern part of the dunes and made to the top of the highest dune in the world (that is the dune at the highest altitude, not the tallest). We had a blast on the dunes but unfortunately we didn't have much energy left at the end of the day to make the six mile trek up Lake Como Trail to our camp at 12,000 ft. Our attempt at summitting Blanca was called off for safety reasons, but at least we found out how awesome sledding on the dunes was (we would definitely recommend it!).
